Tour Overview
Cuba is one of the most beguiling travel destinations on the planet. Gorgeous neo classical buildings, classic American cars, the best music and dance on the planet and super friendly locals put Cuba firmly on everyone’s bucket list. Enjoy a two week full cultural immersion based in Old Havana. Spanish classes are supplemented with community based volunteering and cultural tours in the afternoons; other activities include trips to the beach at the weekends. Accommodation is a licensed Casa Particulare in the atmospheric heart of Old Havana; shared same sex dorm rooms with other program participants (couples or friends booking together automatically upgraded to private room with en suite/private bathroom) OR upon payment of a single room supplement you have the option to stay in another nearby Casa with your own room and private en suite bathroom. Either way breakfast and lunch are served at our main Casa and this is the hub of program activities. This is also where Spanish lessons are taken as well as group discussions, planning meetings and impromptu social gatherings. This is a busy program with a big social dimension and offers the possibility of a full immersion into Cuban life – past and present – and an opportunity to really understand what makes this amazing country so special.

Lessons take the format of 3 x 45 minute lessons each morning, with 15 minute breaks to refresh, making approximately 3 hours of Spanish lessons each day – 15 hours per week. Lessons are held from 09:00 sharp, Monday to Friday.
* The Cultural Immersion content features additional Spanish language tuition, oral comprehension and dialogue (approx. 4 hours per week).
VOLUNTEERING
When you start packing we ask you to consider bringing something to donate; such as any sports items, children’s toys… and arts & crafts items. We’re not asking you to go shopping or break your budget, just ask around and see if there are unused or under used things lying around yours or friends houses that might be put to more productive use here. Cuba is still subject to heavy hitting sanctions and a trade embargo imposed by her next door neighbour! For more details about or main volunteer partners, see below;
Arco Iris & Barrio Habana Vieja Community Centre’s
We work with kids, and support volunteer organisers with maintenance and kids activities in Habana Vieja & Centro. The kids include those from broken and troubled families and our focus – in addition to creating a fun filled environment – is to give its members better preparation for adulthood and parenthood. A variety of classes are given, but focus always remains on social skills and confidence building. Activities include acting, dancing and singing classes and we often make presentations with our volunteers.
Sports Complejo
The sports complejo has been the main sports facility for all the schools in Habana Vieja for generations. It is a very established facility but lacks basic facilities. Sports run at this location include; baseball, volleyball, athletics, wrestling, basketball and judo in the near future.
We support sports in Cuba whenever possible, the benefits sports bring to society are well known to Cubans and we follow their lead. Improving facilities and donating equipment are where our support is most required.
DISCOVER CUBA
In its day Havana was one of the most important and wealthy cities on the planet. The source of this wealth is undoubtedly controversial and Cuba’s more recent history is testament to this controversy. The faded patina of Havana’s gorgeous neo classical architecture, rumble of classic American cars and curious soviet era high rise buildings force you to question – what is Cuba?
We would like to help you answer this question through a series of cultural excursions and encounters with Cuban people. The format is varied, for example, a guided tour of a museum, or a weekend excursion down ‘Paseo del Prado’ to see the free open air art classes and discussion groups, or a sporting event such as baseball or basketball game or other ‘event’ where there is a big social gathering.
These cultural experiences and excursions are with our trained local guides who will show you how to buy (and spend!) local peso’s, take local transport and generally make you feel at home and comfortable with your new surroundings.
Day 7 : End Of Week / Start Of Weekend
Location: Habana Vieja Old Havana, Havana
Accommodation: Casa Particulare
Accommodation Name: Casa Corazon Cuba
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Your first free weekend in Habana! There are so many things to do including the amazing nightlife. It's possible you have made new friends and have made plans - either way our Program Managers are on hand for ideas.
Usually the weekend features some quality beach time at one of the pristine sandy beaches that lie less than 30 minutes by bus to the east of the city. This program includes an escorted trip to the beach one afternoon, and it's great to do as the locals do, and chill at the beach to recuperate before a busy night on the town.
There is also the opportunity to help out at Paseo del Prado where local artists give local kids free arts & crafts lessons on Saturday and Sunday from 12 till 3pm. Our clients have a long history of helping out including donating arts & crafts supplies that we encourage clients to bring to Cuba.
We encourage clients to take this program for 2 to 4 weeks to really progress Spanish lessons and get immersed in Cuban life. For clients staying for a few weeks there is also the option to take a popular 3 day / 2 night trip to Vinales where our local partner organises activities such as a horseback exploration of Vinales Valley among tobacco plantations. If you are interested in doing this drop us a line when you are booking this tour for more information.

-
Will there be WiFi or Internet Service?
WiFi is still not widely available in Cuba except on a pay as you go basis in government hotels and internet cafes. However, inexpensive SIM cards can now be purchased on arrival – our local team can help you buy these. It may be advisable to ensure your phone is ‘unlocked’ and/or has a VPN service to ensure continuity of services when in Cuba. The situation is constantly evolving and improving so there is no need to be ‘offline’ for extended periods – unless you would like to be!
-
What currency or money should I take to Cuba?
Following the abolition of the CUC (convertible peso) in 2021 the only official national currency now in circulation is the Cuban Peso (also known as ‘Moneda Nacional’). However, USD and EURO cash is widely accepted and easily converted into local currency. Bank cards drawn on US banks are still not accepted in Cuba so US residents should bring sufficient USD cash for all your spending requirements while in Cuba. For other visitors, to ensure maximum flexibility and to achieve the best rate of exchange, we also recommend you bring cash – ideally USD or EURO. Although ATM machines are widely available throughout Cuba the exchange rate is not so good – we will show you where/how to change money into local currency during your ‘welcome camino’ after you arrive to us. Only government owned business accept card payments.
-

Please let us know of any changes to your travel plans at your earliest convenience so we can reschedule accordingly. We do not require prepayment/deposit which gives you flexibility to change plans as required.
-
Do I need a visa?
You will need to get a visa (also known as Tourist Card) to enter Cuba. These are easy to buy online – we recommend the following service, see; https://www.easytouristcard.com?aff=43 The standard Tourist Card is valid for 30 days. However, this can be extended twice when you are in the country on payment of a small fee – our local team can help you. This means you can stay for up to 90 days maximum on a single visit. From 1 January 2025 the Tourist Card will be replaced by an eVisa which will be obtainable in the same way as above. A pink coloured ‘Tourist Card’ is required when flying to Cuba directly from the USA and a green coloured ‘Tourist Card’ is required to visit Cuba when flying from any country except the USA. For US citizens / guests travelling directly from the US to Cuba we recommend the following service, see; https://www.onlinetouristcard.com Our programs comply with ongoing US travel restrictions and are 100% legal for US and non US citizens alike. It is no longer necessary to apply to ‘OFAC’ for special permission to visit Cuba. When flying direct from the US to Cuba your airline will require you to sign and retain a one page ‘affidavit’. This document lists 12 permitted categories of travel to Cuba. Please simply tick the box marked ‘SUPPORT THE CUBAN PEOPLE’ as this is a travel category our programs comply with.
-
Will the accommodation included meet local health and safety regulations?
Despite being a materially poor country Cuba is well organised and there is a lot of civic pride which is one of the reasons Cuba is such an enjoyable destination for first time visitors. There are many rules and bylaws required to operate a tourism business such as our and we are 100% compliant with all relevant rules and bylaws.
