Tour Overview
One of the most awe-inspiring sections of a trek across Jordan, this route was recently mentioned by National Geographic as one of the world's best fifteen hikes. The trail descends from the heights of the mountain plateaus to the Araba Valley and climbs back again, crossing several climate zones, diverse ecosystems hidden in canyons, and dramatic labyrinths of hills and valleys displaying the full spectrum of the region’s geology. The scenery spans from majestic and epic mountaintops to peaceful, idyllic countryside where new landscapes appear along the way. If the natural attractions aren’t enough, the route ends with the Nabatean masterpiece, Petra. The city in the rocks holds days' worth of exploration by itself, and the short route the Jordan Trail takes through it is meant only to display a few of its highlights and to provide a base for further exploring, not to fully capture its depth. Few other long-distance trails can boast stages as consistently spectacular as this or end in a place as worthy of a visit as Petra.
Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1 : Arriving At Airport Q.A.A – Amman
Location: Amman
Accommodation: Hotel
Accommodation Name: Toledo or similar
Welcome to the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan. The airport is a 30-minute drive to the capital city of Amman. Today is arrival day and for those arriving in time, this is a good opportunity to discover the beauty of the capital Amman and to try the delightful Jordanian food available in the numerous restaurants and cafes across the city.
Day 2 : Amman-Madaba-Mount Nebo-Karak-Dana
Location: Madaba
Accommodation: Camp
Accommodation Name: Rummana Camp Site (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast
An early breakfast this morning ready for a prompt departure to Madaba - a town with a strong Christian heritage and aptly dubbed the 'City of Mosaics'. Around 90 minutes from the capital, Madaba is home to hundreds of Byzantine-era mosaics, the most famous of these is the 6th century map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Created with two million pieces of vividly coloured local stone, it is believed to be the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land.
Continuing our journey for another 20 minutes, we will arrive at Mount Nebo, referenced in the Old Testament as the place that Moses once stood to look over the Promised Land. This sacred location is important to many devoted pilgrims and on a clear day offers views out across the Dead Sea, Bethlehem and Jerusalem.
Later this morning we carry on travelling south, just as traders, armies and pilgrims have done before us, along the impressive 5,000-year-old King's Highway to Kerak. Imposingly situated on a rocky outcrop next to the road and containing a maze of stone-vaulted halls and passageways, this ancient Crusader stronghold is the most famous among a chain of fortresses built for the Holy War against Islam.
Our packed day of sightseeing ends with a short drive to Petra - without doubt Jordan's most valuable treasure. We can look forward to a couple of days spent here to really get under the skin of this awe-inspiring site. If your tour started on a Saturday, we arrive in time to take an optional candlelight tour of the ancient city. Abandoned centuries ago, this other-worldly place is enhanced by the play of light and shadow to create an altogether magical setting.
Day 3 : Dana-Wadi Dana-Feynan
Location: Dana
Accommodation: Hostel, Camp
Accommodation Name: Wild Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast
Today's walk descends from the Mediterranean climate(1200m) above the sea level to 100m above sea level. Throughout this 16K walk, you will hike in a natural open flora museum. Wadi Dana is the most important geological aspect in the Dana nature reserve. Its great canyon joins the rift valley through the Feynan desert (mentioned in the Bible as Fyenon). This nature dates back for thousands of years as Feynan is the oldest sight for copper mining (4600 BC). It’s a very colourful day where you come across Bedouin families who still practice this mystical lifestyle and where you can see their scattered goat herds.
At the end of the walk, you visit the ancient copper mining sights (1st & 2nd century AD) (Roman Paganism era). This walk triggers your thoughts and emotions about history and nature.
