Tour Overview

Often referred to as the 'land of silence', Sardinia is a place of outstanding natural beauty, with its crystal-clear sea, limestone ridges and deep gorges. During the week we ride across the wild and pristine southwestern part of the region, passing abandoned mines, ancient ruins and gleaming white beaches. The route starts with a circular ride through the fascinating Sinis wetlands, home to colonies of pink flamingos, then moves on to the spectacular Costa Verde (Green Coast) named for its abundance and variety of Mediterranean vegetation. After cycling past the ancient mines of Ingurtosu and Planusartu, we reach the beautiful beach of Portixeddu where the impressive Pan di Zucchero white cliff towers out of the emerald waters. We then board a local ferry to the fishing village of Carloforte and explore the delightful isle of Sant'Antioco before crossing to the mainland, where we conclude a week of wonderful cycling pedalling across the rolling hills of the stunning Costa del Sud, with its white beaches, coastal pools and imposing high cliffs. Having built a good appetite, you will have plenty of opportunities to sample Sardinia's unique, mouth-watering cuisine: the perfect mix for a great week of cycling!

Highlights

  • Cycle along Sardinia’s unspoilt southwestern coast

  • Enjoy Sardinian warm hospitality and delicious cuisine

  • Relax on Sardinia's stunning beaches

  • Explore fascinating archaeological sites and picturesque fishing villages

Itinerary

Day 1

Fly to Cagliari and transfer to our hotel in Cabras, in the Sinis Peninsula.

Day 2

We start the week with a ride across the fascinating Sinis wetlands, whose
lagoons are home to colonies of pink flamingos and a wealth of other
birdlife, which nest here for part of the year. We cycle to the coast at Mari
Ermi and the spectacular white quartz beach of Is Arutas. A short ride down
the peninsula to San Giovanni Sinis takes us to the Punic and Roman city of
Tharros, one of the island's most important archaeological sites from this
era, overlooking the emerald sea (optional guided visit).

Day 3

Today we ride through the natural beauty spots of the Costa Verde (Green
Coast), named after the green, wild vegetation that covers much of its
mountainous surroundings and the colour of its water. We cycle across
reclaimed farmland to the picturesque fishing village of Marceddi and to the
long beach of Piscinas, bordered by huge sand dunes - some over 50m high!
From Piscinas we head back to our cosy accommodation.

Day 4

This is another tough day, but we are rewarded with superb scenery! After a
fantastic descent to the Mannu River, we reach the start of the miles of
remote golden beaches around Portixeddu. We cycle past the abandoned mines of
Pranu Sartu and the stunning inlet of Cala Domestica before reaching the 130m
high sea-stack of Pan di Zucchero and the former mining village of Nebida. *
*

Day 5

Today's route starts with a beautiful descent to Fontanamare followed by an
undulating coastal ride to Portoscuso. Here, we board the local ferry to the
fishing village of Carloforte, the only existing one on Isola di San Pietro.
(San Pietro island) There is time to explore this delightful islet with its
sandy coves, dramatic rocky headlands and tiny hamlets, before rejoining the
ferry to the equally unspoilt island of Sant' Antioco.

Day 6

This morning we cycle through the lush meadows of the island of
Sant’Antioco before crossing back to the mainland and visit the Pisan
sanctuary at Tratalias, dating back to the Romanesque period. From here we
ride across the quiet country lanes of Sulcis until we reach the village of
Sant’Anna Arresi. Nearby are the pinewoods, lagoons and beaches of Porto
Pino.

Day 7

Today is the longest day in terms of distance. We pedal across the beautiful
southern countryside over the jagged coastal plains of the Costa del Sud, a
wild and unspoilt region of gleaming white beaches, coastal pools and
imposing high cliffs punctuated by 16th Century Spanish watchtowers. We cycle
as far as Cape Teulada, Sardinia’s southernmost tip, where dramatic cliffs
rise up to 230m above the crystal clear sea. We stop in Pula, famous for its
proximity to the ancient Phoenician site of Nora, founded in the 9th Century
BC and now partly submerged under the sea (optional guided visit). From the
end of the ride we take a transfer to Cagliari, where we celebrate the end of
a great cycling week; dinner and overnight in Cagliari.

Day 8

End in Cagliari; transfer to the airport and fly to London.

Food

All breakfasts and 2 dinners included. Italy’s cuisine is hearty,
satisfying and full of flavour. Inspired by the kitchens of the nonna,
Italy’s food is authentic and surprising – pizza and pasta are only the
tip of the iceberg when it comes to the diverse array of unforgettable food
you’ll find on this trip. The Traditional Sardinian cuisine is full of
local and delicious recipes. Popular specialities include: roast suckling
pig, excellent seafood dishes and local Sardinian wines, such as Vermentino,
Nuragus, Cannonau and Monica. Mirto is Sardinia’s after dinner liqueur,
which is made from the leaves of the myrtle plant. As a visitor it can be
hard to escape the tourist traps that is why our local leaders will be at
hand with some good restaurant recommendations.

Accommodation

We use comfortable three- and four-star hotels and good quality agriturismos (renovated farmhouses). All accommodation is locally owned and family-run and the hotels have been carefully selected for their welcoming atmosphere and delicious home-made cuisine. All rooms are comfortable with en suite facilities. Some hotels have a swimming pool, one is conveniently located near a beautiful beach, while others are in the quiet Sardinian countryside or pretty villages.

Examples of hotels we use are:

Cabras: Villa Canu or Aquae Sinis

Arborea: Hotel le Torri

Arbus: Agriturismo Rocce Bianche

Nebida area: Locanda L’Agusteri

Sant’Antioco: MuMA Hostel

Sant’Anna Arresi area: Lù Hotel or Grotta del Tesoro

Cagliari: Hotel Italia or Due Colonne or Regina Margherita

We can arrange single rooms throughout the trip (subject to availability). Please check with your sales representative for availability and prices.

Due to the layout of the accommodations, single bedrooms vary in size, and in the hotel in Cagliari they can either be double rooms for single use or standard single rooms, according to availability. Please be aware that some single rooms can be on the small side.

This is a fantastic, well organised trip. If you enjoy cycling and don't mind putting in some effort to get up a few tricky hills, you will be rewarded with beautiful scenery and lovely food. We had a mixed group of cyclists, some of whom were doing their first cycling holiday and I think everyone enjoyed it. The organisation and encouragement of our tour leader Michele Q and his assistant Ado helped to make this a really memorable trip.

This was my second cycling trip with Exodus and the best so far. Great company with a diverse group of all ages, wonderful weather and relaxing accommodation. The lunchtime visits to beaches, lazy lunches to chat with your fellow travellers and a blow out carb fest with local wine in the evening meant smiles all round. The cycling and scenery was pretty good too :-) a non-stop photo opportunity through a quite unspoilt area of Sardinia with bright blue skies and crystal clear waters.

First timers to Exodus - Won't be our last....

My wife and I booked our first Exodus trip knowing

My wife and I booked our first Exodus trip knowing we were not the most keenest of cyclists, but wanted a more active holiday than a standard package holiday typically offers. We were a little fearful of whether we could manage to cycle for 6 days solid. We are both early 50's and enjoy active outdoor pursuits including walking, golf and occasional gym. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, and even managed to complete all days without any assistance from the transport who followed the group. Being part of the 16-strong group, it was nice to be able to meet so many different people and talk to them all during the cycling and also during the group meals and stops along the way. I would recommend this holiday to anyone who enjoys an active holiday, with stunning scenery and the friendliest and most hospitable Sardinian people.

Some challenging and some easy-going cycling in a very interesting part of Italy. The coastal scenery was impressive, the food was varied and always enjoyable and the company was great! and then there was the swimming!! Our leaders were fit ,competent and informative and complemented each other nicely. Oh!did I mention the weather? Warm and dry,hot at times, great for cycling.

Super Trip

We had pretty bad weather but apart from a few minutes we managed to avoid the rain - until Cagliari. The trip was superb, mainly because of the leader Giovanni and driver Antonio, though our group (11 in total) could not have got on better - a superb bunch of folks. The cycling was spectacular on days 2,3 and 6 with mountain roads and spectacular views. We also managed to swim twice and enjoy lunch on 3 beach restaurants. Giovanni and Antonio really looked after us, having to revert to plan B or C due to the cold and dull weather. The highlight for me was Carloforte - beautiful place. The worst thing was the flight times from the UK, meaning we arrived late at our first hotel and on our return home. Overall - brilliant week, would highly recommend.

This was our first cycling holiday - so we weren't quite sure what to expect - we did not need to worry it was an excellent holiday and we were looked after from the moment we arrived in Sardinia until we left the island a week later. Everything was organized and arranged and all we needed to worry about was choices for lunch, our evening meal and what flavor of gelato we should try next.!!

Great way to see the countryside.  Fantastic views along the coastline.  A holiday with like minded people. The only downside was the lack of choice for restaurants due to being out in the country most nights - but what was available served good food.

Good cycling around the island. A couple of the days are a bit tough, but you can always get in the bus if you don't fancy it.

Spectacular and Perfectly Led Trip Round Sardinia

We have just finished the May cycling trip around

We have just finished the May cycling trip around the South east coast of Sardinia. Although we were unlucky with some poor weather on the first few days; the quality and enthusiasm of our leader Michelle and his assistant Alesandro more than kept our spirits up. They really were superb and we couldn’t have hope for a more knowledgable and able team to show us around and help us up some of the steeper climbs. There were however some low points; we did find that for the price of the trip the standard of the accommodation could have been better and also we would have expected some more dinners included. But all in all we had a wonderful trip around this spectacular part of the island; and had a really lovely group to share it with.
