Tour Overview

Boasting one of the most beautiful and well-preserved coastlines of Europe, blessed with wild pristine beaches, towering cliffs, great biodiversity, remote whitewashed traditional villages and a temperate climate, Portugal’s Rota Vicentina is the ultimate hikers and ramblers' paradise. We have hand-picked the very best walks from the 125km selection of coastal trails that span the tranquil Portuguese region of Alentejo and along the few remaining undeveloped shores of the Algarve. Starting from the picturesque town of Vila Nova de Milfontes, we walk on quiet cliff trails used by locals to access the beaches and best fishing spots, and end in the famous town of Sagres. We stay overnight in three different villages chosen to provide easy access to/from the trails each day. The refreshing coastal breeze and inviting landscape make walking in this remote corner of Europe truly reinvigorating.

Highlights

  • Experience being immersed in impressive landscapes: dramatic cliffs, forgotten sandy beaches and quiet trails

  • Reach Cape of St Vincent, Europe's most south western point

  • Stay overnight in authentic whitewashed villages including Sagres

Itinerary

Day 1

Those of us on the group flight touch down in Faro airport and will be driven
approx. 2 hrs the charming seaside town of Vila Nova de Milfontes, located in
the heart of the beautiful Alentejo coastline. Still largely undiscovered by
foreign visitors, the town is delightfully Portuguese, filled with cobbled
streets, whitewashed houses and scenic views across the Mira River. It is
also the start point of incredible coastal trails leading to vast stretches
of wild and deserted beaches. Despite its remote location, it has an
extensive selection of restaurants, and a lively nightlife making it a
perfect base for the first three days of the tour.

Day 2

We start the week with a relatively short coastal hike offering superb views
throughout. Leaving from the hotel, we cross by boat and admire the views of
the River Mira meeting the ocean, with the small white-washed town and lush
hillsides in the background. There are stretches along today's trail where
native vegetation displays all its diversity and other areas where it has
been wiped out by a most aggressive exotic plant – the Acacia. At times
farmland stretches right down to the ocean, at others the imprint of human
habitation is local, non-commercial fishing or small stone age quarries
hidden amongst the dunes. Between March and October you’ll be able to
spot  the many types of swift - Alpine, Pallid and Common  - that all nest
along this coast. Interestingly, swifts spend over 90% of their life in the
air as they feed, mate and sleep in flight - they are so well adapted to
flying that landing on the ground may be fatal. The walk ends in
the peaceful small village of Almograve, perfect for an unhurried afternoon
stroll or peaceful pause before we return by private transfer to Vila Nova de
Milfontes.

Day 3

Small fishing harbours, sand dunes, the scent of pine tree forests and the
sight, seen nowhere else in the world, of storks nesting on the cliffs make
this today's walk truly special. We start with a short transfer (approx.
20mins) to Cabo Sardão lighthouse which was peculiarly built the wrong way
round. The entry door is facing the ocean and the lighthouse is facing
inland! This is the start of today's trail which follows the high cliffs
exposed to the constant salty ocean waves and winds, and favourite nesting
spot for over twenty species of bird. These include the Jackdaw, Shag, Common
Kestrel, White Stork, and the Peregrine Falcon, the fastest recorded animal
in the world,  reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h when diving. We will
have time to stop and watch these birds, especially during spring, when it
is possible to quietly observe their mating rituals and the careful building
of their nests. We pass Lapa das Pombas, a tiny non-commercial fishing
harbour, before concluding the walk in the sleepy seaside village
of Zambujeira do Mar and its wonderful beach. In the afternoon we return to
Vila Nova de Milfontes by transfer (approx. 30mins).

Day 4

This morning we transfer (approx. 40 mins) to Carvalhal beach, the start of
today's walk. The cliff face on this stretch of the walk is of particular
interest. It is composed of schist and greywacke which results from the
consolidation of sand, clay and volcanic ashes accumulated on the bottom of
an ancient ocean over 300 million years ago

This whole coastal region is believed by many to have a particular energy,
and it was here that the Fado diva Amália Rodrigues sought refuge and
inspiration for her songs. Along the walk we may also spot traces
of nocturnal mammals including the Egyptian Mongoose (locally known as
“Escalabardo”), weasel, Beech Marten (also known as “Papalvo”),
badger, genet and rabbits. Before reaching Odeceixe, we take a break on
Ponta em Branco (white summit) so named for the colour of the sediments that
form its summit, marking the border between the Alentejo and the Algarve
regions. This is considered one of the most scenic points in the entire
region with views over Odeceixe beach, with the mountain top of Fóia and
Monchique as a backdrop. We transfer to the cosy hotel near Arrifana beach
and enjoy a refreshing dip in the swimming pool, or a drink on the sunny
terrace before dinner.

Day 5

Today is a free day to choose from the many optional activities available in
the area. You may decide to go on a self-guided circular walk passing the
beaches of Monte Clérigo, Pontal da Atalaia?, as well as the famous
surfing ?beach of Arrifana?. Alternatively you may book a surfing class
or a horse riding excursion along the spectacular coastline. Whilst your tour
leader will not acompany you on your free day, they will be able to help you
book the optional activities. We also suggest a visit to the small market
town of Aljezur, famous for its whitewashed houses and cobbled streets
and dominated by the ruins of a tenth century Moorish castle.

Day 6

Today we travel further south and transfer (approx. 30 mins) to the village
of Carrapateira, the start of today's short circular walk. Along the circuit,
we come across various viewpoints with superb views of the sandy beaches of
Bordeira and Amado as well as the ruins of an ancient Islamic fishermen’s
settlement. On the first part of the trail, we walk through undulating dunes
carpeted by lush vegetation and aromatic wild plants including thyme, yellow
amaranths, rosemary, lavender, crowberries, blue pimpernel and sea lavender.
We then walk along the limestone cliffs for most of the trail and may
get the opportunity to spot cormorants, a wintering bird and expert angler,
consuming almost 1 kg of fish per day. In the afternoon we transfer (approx.
20 mins) to the village of Sagres, at the extreme western tip of the
Algarve. Although primarily known as a surfing destination (and surprisingly
not the Portuguese beer of the same name), Sagres has a lot more to offer.
You may decide to spend the rest of the day in one of the sheltered pristine
beaches.

Day 7

Surrounded by foaming Atlantic breakers, Cabo de Sao Vicente marks the most
south-westerly point of Europe. The final walk from Sagres out to the edge of
the continent should prove to be one of the highlights of the week.
Surrounded by coastal scenery, we follow a wild trail along sandy paths and
gorse-strewn meadows to the very edge of the Iberian Peninsula. Setting off
from our hotel, we make our way to the start point of our walk, near Beliche
Beach. We set out across towering cliffs and ravines covered with native
vegetation. We pass by the golden beach of Beliche, and, then after a short
section inland, Telheiro beach, a place of extraordinary geological interest
thanks to the rock composition of the cliffs. The last section of the path
continues along the cliff top before a memorable arrival at Cape St. Vincent
where we find a lighthouse, museum and small bar offering wonderful photo
opportunities. It's only a short transfer (5 mins) back to Sagres where we
can choose to visit the imposing sea fortress at sunset or relax with a cold
drink on the waterfront, watching fishermen mending their nets. You may
decide to book an optional dolphin-watching excursion along the coast
(weather and season dependent).

Day 8

Those on the group flight travel to Faro airport by private minibus in the
morning (approx. 1hr 30 mins) for the inbound flight to London.
Alternatively, you may decide to extend your trip by a few days and relax on
some the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve. Please contact our Customer
Operations or Sales team for quote on post-tour accommodation.

Accommodation

We use three unique hotels, all with a swimming pool and two with spa facilities. The hotels we normally use are:

Monchique: Hotel Villa Termal Caldas de Monchique – Pure (nights 1-2)

This 22-room boutique property with mountain and valley views sits within the Villa Termal Caldas de Monchique Spa Resort. That provides easy access to plenty of excellent amenities, including an outside pool, several green areas and the Thermal spa. There’s also a restaurant serving a mix of traditional Portuguese and contemporary cuisines plus a selection of bars.

Aljezur: Hotel Vale da Telha (nights 3-5)

Simple but well suited for our adventures, Hotel Vale da Telha has a relaxed atmosphere and modern rooms with balconies. When it’s time to relax, head to the pool area, where you’ll find shaded loungers on a spacious wooden sundeck.

Sagres: Memmo Baleeira Hotel (nights 6-7)

Enjoy magnificent vistas of the Atlantic Ocean with a stay at this four-star design hotel. The 144 rooms and suites have views over the sea or Baleeira Harbour, while the property also has an outdoor pool, plus a spa, heated indoor pool, Turkish bath and sauna.

Food

All breakfasts and 5 picnic lunches

The pic-nic lunches will include a mix of sandwiches, cheeses, cured meats
and fruit.

During the week we will get the opportunity to sample other delicacies and
traditional dishes of this region which will include some of the freshest
seafood and fish. The local speciality from the sea is the Barnacle Perceve,
this is not taken from the bottom of boats but the bottom of submerged local
cliffs, it is harvested by hand using a dangerous and traditional method,
which involves one of the two collectors dangling by a rope from the top of
the cliffs! Away from the sea the dried hams, salamis and cheese are
excellent. Good quality meat is also always on the menu. Vegetables are
plentiful and although vegetarian dishes in traditional restaurants are
available, the choice may be limited.

We are both in our mid-sixties and this was our first walking tour. We loved it. We always felt safe (even when going up a very daunting slope) and knew that our guides really, really wanted us to have a brilliant experience. Luis was extremely knowledgeable, energetic, friendly and always in good spirits. We were impressed with how the local restaurant, bar, and hotel people interacted with him; there was genuine mutual respect and appreciation. Francisco was also so knowledgeable and patient, and his grandmother makes wonderful Easter Bread. We will never forget our joy at seeing Luis and Francisco drive up to us at 10 p.m. to offer us a ride back to our hotel after another late-in-the-day Portuguese Dinner. Together, our two guides set a very upbeat, positive tone for our week together. They constantly and sincerely listened to our feedback and adjusted to our idiosyncrasies.

The coast of Portugal offers varied terrain and great opportunity for hiking and to be guided by Francisco and Ines made it even better. Their knowledge about the area is extensive and they took time and effort to ensure everyone achieved what they wanted from the trip. I cannot recommend this trip enough - it truly was an amazing week.

You can’t imagine how beautiful Portugal’s coast is until you do this trip. The beaches are so scenic and uncrowded. The trails were not difficult and everyone in our group was able to keep the pace. There were adequate stops to enjoy the views and take a swim in the water. Our guides Francisco and Ines were absolutely wonderful. I have a special interest in birds and plants; both were very knowledgeable. They even carried a bird book and a plant ID book. The guides brought a camera with a very long lens, so they were able to share close-ups of the baby storks with our group. The guides were always available on WhatsApp if we had any questions (during our free time). The trip was very well organized; the guides did a lot of work behind the scenes coordinating our drop off and pick up locations. I also really enjoyed the smaller villages we passed through and I was able to get some wonderful photographs. Portugal’s food is fantastic, and the guides helped me to find a restaurant to sample barnacles (highly recommended). The wine and distillery tastings were very enjoyable. I combined this trip with the Highlights of Portugal; it was easy to take a public bus from Lisbon and back again. This was one of my favorite Exodus trips (and I’ve done many) thanks to the competent guides and lovely scenery.

Fantastic week away

We both had a wonderful week in May 2023, Walking

We both had a wonderful week in May 2023, Walking Portugal's Coast and Beaches, guided by Francisco and Ines. It was theses guides that made a good walk into a fantastic walk. They are a great team, passionate about the history, nature and conservation of the area. They complemented each other like 2 pieces of a jigsaw. We were briefed each preceding evening on the appropriate clothing, type of terrain, difficulty and interesting features to expect. At the end of every day, they encouraged feedback to gauge if we were happy with the speed and terrain. The lunch packs were made up by local bakeries and were appropriate to everyone’s needs. Their choice of hotels and restaurant recommendations were excellent. The coast line is both scenic and dramatic, with every bay and cliff top being pristine and litter free. We visited a vineyard and a Medronho distillery with tasting and snacks provided. We also visited a reconstructed castle in Aljezur, an abandoned village, Aldeia Da Pedralva, which has been restored to its former glory and a huge wall mural dedicated to Amalia Rodrigues a famous female Portuguese melancholic singer. All these visits were very informative. On the first day Francisco and Ines had asked us to share our particular interests and unusually I said “Rocks”. To my surprise and delight both Francisco and Ines made a point of showing me some unusual geological features everyday. They were both careful and courteous and drivers. Had we opted for a self-guided tour we would not have seen, enjoyed nor learnt so much about the region and its excellent well priced eateries. With their local, inside knowledge they were able to tailor the walks, activities and suggestions to take account of the most up-to-date information. All in all, an excellent week of walking rendered outstanding because of the ethos of these 2 guides.

Beyond fabulous!!!

A2z travel and Exodus exceeded my expectations!!!

A2z travel and Exodus exceeded my expectations!!! Portugal is an amazing country and our tour guides took us to spots we definately would have missed if we traveled on our own. This was my first guided tour- I was nervous it would be very basic and boring. Our trip was the farthest thing from boring! We hiked, toured, ate and ate and ate some more, drank great wine and port and more unique spirits. So many laughs shared with very fun people! I will go in more trips with Luis and his team of exceptional guides. If you are on the fence-go for it!!!! I will return to Portugal for sure. Thanks Joao, Carlos, Luis and Hanne and the amazing women on the tour! Shawn H North Vancouver, BC Canada

A very well organised trip, superb scenery, stunning views on all of the walks. The two guides were very knowledgeable and lead the group in a pleasant and professional manner. They found great venues for meals in each location.

Beautiful views

I nearly didn't go on this trip as I prefer longer

I nearly didn't go on this trip as I prefer longer walks with more challenge, however I'm really glad I went! Who can fail to enjoy themselves where there's a beautiful view everywhere you look, the weather is wonderful (22 degrees on average over Easter when I was there) and the paths and walking is varied. Even if you're used to doing level 4 or higher graded walks I still think there's much to enjoy and yo'd be missing out by omitting it because it's a level 2. The guides (Luis and Francisco) were helpful without being bossy, knowledgeable without labouring the point and just really easy company.

It is incredible how much difference to my wellbeing a week away made. We had incredible guides in Luis and Irella, jaw dropping rugged scenery and an exceptional group. Each day was different as we walked on the rugged cliffs or on the beaches to the Atlantic Ocean. I was mesmerised by its beauty and I felt as though my mind had been cleansed by the sea, light breeze and sunshine. Looking back, i can now tell you the stress of lockdown and london life and not going anywhere for 18 months had really took its toll and this trip bought me back to me and made me have faith that the world will be ok again. Absolutely loved it and just what the doctor ordered. Im home and feel renewed and rejuvenated. Thank you Luis, my wonderful group, beautiful Portugal and Exodus!
