Tour Overview

Just an hour’s drive north of Venice, in the foothills of the Dolomites, is one of the world’s best yet largely undiscovered wine regions. Here ancient terraced vineyards clinging to the sides of every possible slope are dedicated exclusively to grapes for Italy’s most prized sparkling wine: Prosecco. Based in an elegant hotel, located in the heart of the so called 'Prosecco Road' - Italy’s oldest wine route - we spend a week walking through picturesque rolling hills and sampling the area’s delicious cuisine and authentic bubbles. We also visit charming mediaeval villages such as Cison, Follina, Asolo as well as the beautiful capital province of Treviso.

  • Stay in a comfortable hotel set in a picturesque location

  • Taste the authentic Italian bubbles and visit local producer

  • Explore charming mediaeval villages and Treviso

Itinerary

Day 1

Fly to Venice and transfer to Pieve di Soligo, a small village located in the
heart of the Prosecco hills, approximately 60km north of Venice. The
surrounding area is picturesque, with lush vineyards covering the slopes of
every possible hill and old churches, abbeys, villas and ancient castles
dotting the landscape. Prosecco has been produced here for centuries, but
only more recently, thanks to the surge in its popularity worldwide, has the
area captured the deserved spotlight. Nevertheless, still relatively few
tourists visit this wine region each year, making it an ideal location for
our week of walking, wine tasting and cultural discovery in a still very
authentic rural part of Italy. Depending on the group arrival time, there
might be some time for a quick orientation walk near our hotel.

Day 2

This morning we transfer to the pretty town of Cison di Valmarino, one of the
best-preserved villages in the Prosecco area, containing numerous historical
monuments and buildings that reveal its past role as major feudal estate. The
gentle walk follows a waterway, crossing tranquil woodlands, and passing by
the ancient manor and fortress of Castelbrando, which offers panoramic views
over the farmland and villages far below. The walk ends in Follina, famous
for the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria, a mystical site enclosing one of
Italy’s most beautiful cloisters. The monks were the first to give a boost
to the development of the textile sector in this area, weaving wool here from
the Middle Ages onwards. In the afternoon we return to the hotel and the
remainder of the day is free to relax in the village or you may decide to
take an optional short walk along the picturesque river banks in proximity of
our hotel.

Day 3

Today's walk takes us to the heartland of the Prosecco hills, namely
Valdobbiadene, S. Pietro di Barbozza and S.Stefano. The majority of the
winemakers are based right here, amongst the picture-perfect terraced steep
hills which are arguably the prettiest of the whole Veneto region. Our walk
follows a mix of man-made tracks and paths twisting through the vineyards,
and offers spectacular views of the fertile landscape and hamlets perched on
the hillsides. During the walk we will have the opportunity to visit of one
of the top local Prosecco producers, whose passion for wine making goes back
for generations in the family. After a tour of the wine cellars, we will have
the opportunity to sample different varieties of Prosecco during a guided
wine-tasting (included). We return to the hotel in the afternoon.

Day 4

In the morning we transfer to the pretty capital province of Treviso, a real
hidden gem often overlooked and perhaps overshadowed by the neighbouring
Venice. Rebuilt and restored after Second World War bombing, the town centre
is a rambling maze of streets lined with arcaded walkways. The town is
circled by a pretty wall and by waterways, which add to its very picturesque
and elegant style. After a walking tour of the town's centre accompanied by a
local guide, we enjoy some free time to wander around at our own pace and
have some lunch (the world-famous Tiramisu was apparently invented in this
city, so it is recommended trying some in one of the best cafes in town!). In
the afternoon we leave the walls of Treviso behind and follow the water flow
of Sile, the longest river of resurgent waters in Europe. This tranquil route
through a nature reserve offers the opportunity to explore the local flora
and fauna and brings to light many evidences of the age-old relationship
between men and this river. Return to the hotel in the evening.

Day 5

After a short private transfer we reach another gem of the Prosecco area and
the start point of today's walk: Villa Barbaro in Maser. The villa is one of
the greatest masterpieces of the famous Italian architect Andrea Palladio
(1508-80), and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is situated in the
middle of a flourishing privately owned estate, and six of its rooms adorned
by beautiful frescos are open to the public. After a short visit, we set off
for our walk starting with a climb to Monte San Giorgio, overlooking the
villa. The route will then veer west, following one of the original
front-lines used during the First World War. The war affected most of this
area as well as many other towns around the Prosecco hills. During the walk
we are able to see the evidence and memorials of the epic deeds that marked
the destiny of generations of people and the course of history throughout the
world. Our end point is the elegant hill-top town of Asolo, known as 'the
pearl of the province of Treviso', for its beautiful setting and charming
historic centre. Free time and return to Pieve di Soligo for dinner.

Day 6

Free day to visit the lovely town of Conegliano (the other major centre of
Prosecco production and wine studies), or take a day-trip to the one and only
Venice (only a short train ride away).

Day 7

Our final walk takes us above the Prosecco hills, to Mt Cesen, a humble,
rounded, grassy mountain, and the highest in its small group of Venetian
Prealps. Rising just above the Piave River at an altitude of 1570 meters it
offers a stunning panorama and popular walking trails which cross mountain
pastures, meadows and a landscape which differs completely to the one we
explored earlier in the week. On a clear day, the views can stretch as far as
the Eastern Alps, Dolomites, and Venice. In the evening, there will be the
opportunity to enjoy a fantastic farewell dinner in one of the best local
restaurants located in a panoramic setting in the heart of the Prosecco
hills.

If the weather conditions are good and the skies are clear, the group will
have the option to go on a longer walk (Distance: 8 Km, Ascent:
450m, Descent: 450m, Maximum altitude: 1406m).

Day 8

This trip ends in the morning of Day 8 in Pieve di Soligo. The morning is
free to visit Pieve Di Soligo's weekly market. The group will be transferred
to Venice airport in the afternoon for the inbound flight to London which is
usually scheduled to depart after 4pm.

Food

The trip includes all breakfasts, 4 lunches, 2 dinners and 2 wine tastings.

The local food of the Prosecco has strong links to ancient traditions and
uses mainly seasonal products grown in the area. It is typical country
cooking, with plenty of delicious, genuine flavours, and makes great use of
garden vegetables, herbs, wild berries, wild mushrooms, asparagus, game and
cheeses. For breakfast, the hotel offers a large selection of cereals, fruit,
homemade cakes, cheese and cold meats, along with tea and coffee of course.
Packed lunches are normally provided for the walks, and consist of sandwiches
with a fruit and snack. During the week there will be also opportunities to
try some of the best local restaurants in the area which offer authentic
cuisine and delicious homemade dishes such as 'spiedo' (spit roasted meat),
wild mushroom risotto, gnocchi, mouth-watering handmade cured meats and
cheeses, all washed down with prime quality Prosecco!

Accommodation

Occupying a spot right next to the Soligo river, the family-run Hotel Conta provides an ideal place to stay for our adventures in the Prosecco Hills. The 49-room property sits in the historic centre of Pieve di Soligo, within walking distance of restaurants, bars and other shops.

Rooms are unfussy and stylish, some overlooking the waterway, while others face the internal patio. And if you feel like sampling more of the local produce, there’s a wine bar in the communal area selling regional food and drinks.

An excellent Spring break

This holiday proved to be all we wanted it to be and more. The scenery was fantastic. Our guides local knowledge meant we saw the best of what was there and had time to explore. Some of the walks were up extremely steep hillsides, but with sufficient time and encouragement, we all got to the tops of the climbs and were rewarded with wonderful views, and sometimes a glass of prosecco!

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!!!

From start to finish I could not fault Nordic walk

From start to finish I could not fault Nordic walking the Prosecco hills of Italy with Exodus. My first Exodus holiday. Our walk leader Serena Cassol was amazing. Her calm approach to the structure of our day was clear and informative. Everything ran smoothly as the day progressed and each day was a new mini adventure with Serena. The Hotel Soligo was spotlessly clean with helpful staff. The private minibus a welcome treat. I felt utterly spoilt. I can’t wait to travel with Exodus again. Thank you.

This was my first walking trip with Exodus (first walking trip ever actually) and I could not have been happier. Exodus was fantastic from my initial email inquiring about the trip all the way to the end. The trip itself was absolutely perfect. From meeting the group at the airport to leaving the following week. I met so many really great people within the group and many I hope to remain in contact with. The walks each day were planned very well, leaving the hotel around 9 or 9:30 each morning and returning normally by 4 or 4:30. The picnic lunches were excellent as well as the hotel dinners. The restaurants and prosecco tasting chosen by Exodus were top notch. The hotel accommodations were beautiful and very spacious although the wi-fi in my room was very spotty, but hey I wasn't there to be on my computer or phone so I was definitely ok with it. The front staff at the hotel were very nice and spoke great English. The hikes were perfect for me, challenging but not so much that you couldn't have fun. With this being my first walking trip I could have been better prepared with proper walking attire and maybe walking poles.

Great walking, excellent refreshment, star guide!

Gillian and I had a great week enjoying the walkin

Gillian and I had a great week enjoying the walking, spectacular views, brilliant wild flowers and varied wines (both Prosecco and some very good local red wines) in the beautiful Prosecco Hills and Pre-Alps, led by the enthusiastic and ebullient Vania de Paoli. It was hotter than expected for the second half of May, making some of the unshaded uphill sections quite taxing, but Vania timed the breaks to ensure that everyone in our varied and convivial group was able (literally!) to take the walks in their stride. A very good way to get back into the swing of foreign holidays after two difficult years.

Get there as soon as you can!

Walking the Prosecco Hills was amazing from start

Walking the Prosecco Hills was amazing from start to finish....I found it hard to leave when it was over! Our tour leader, Vania, is such a great young woman - she couldn't do enough for us, always had a smile on her face and boundless energy and got along so well with everyone in our group. This was my first experience of a walking holiday and now I'm a convert! I found the walks pretty challenging but that served to make me feel that I had really achieved something when I'd finished each one. We had quite a few experienced walkers in our group which I thought might be a bit intimidating, but they were all wonderful people who were happy and willing to share their knowledge, experience and helpful tips to assist the novices amongst us along the way. The whole area is just beautiful...gorgeous scenery even in pretty average, rainy weather and it hasn't been discovered yet by large hordes of tourists! The prosecco was plentiful and amazing and the food....heavenly!!

Almost everything about this trip was excellent: our leader (Bob Mason); the walking and scenery; the restaurants we ate out at; and the visits - particularly to the San Gregorio winery and to Treviso. The weather was mostly warm and sunny which added to the experience. The Hotel Villa Soligo was well appointed, comfortable and the staff were attentive and helpful. It was only let down by the rather odd restaurant run by the eccentric hotel owner. They rarely served exactly what was on the menu.

Foothills of the Dolomites are a beautiful and unspoilt area of Italy with the added bonus of tasting the delicious Prosecco bubbles. Hotel Villa Soliga is comfortable, clean , excellent food , with a delightful pool area and staff who are extremely helpful . All the Restaurants Exodus took the Group to on the evenings we didn't eat in the hotel were excellent and the final evening at Al Roccolo was superb set high up in the hills overlooking the vineyards . Walking overall was good , however, disappointing on occasions when the guide lost his way and part of the group. Also we often seemed to be walking "off piste" which turned into scrambling on tricky terrain. Group on this trip were a fantastic bunch of people and made the trip for me personally .

My first Exodus trip and I wasn’t disappointed. Very well organised with excellent variety each day. Beautiful walks in an amazing landscape. I wanted to know more about Prosecco and on this tour you will do just that with tasting opportunities. Both wine tasting events were a joy with excellent food.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable trip. The beautiful countryside, good hotel, with friendly and helpful staff together with top quality food and drink were super. Personally, I would have enjoyed longer and more varied walks. At times, in the latter part of the day, after our walks, it would be good to break the journey home with a stop either at a place of interest, like a local village or refreshment stop. (If the weather was wet, there wouldn't be a great deal to do back at the hotel).
