Topoxté is located on an island in the Yaxhá Lagoon, very close to the important archaeological site of Yaxhá.
Topoxté received its name from archaeologist and Mayanist Teobert Maler, in 1904;3 from its meaning in the Mayan language "seed of the Ramón tree". There is no previous record of this name, being an important forage tree for the Maya because of the frequent use of its leaves and seeds as a food supplement.3 Prior to this denomination, the site was known as Islapag, according to Juan Galindo in 1831 in a scientific report.
