Guatemala-Copan Ruinas Departure Guatemala on setting time El Progreso is a department that is located in the northeastern region of the Republic of Guatemala, its departmental head is Guastatoya, it limits the North with the department of Alta Verapaz and Baja Verapaz; to the South with Guatemala and Jalapa; to the East with Zacapa and Jalapa; and to the west with Baja Verapaz and Guatemala.
The departmental capital of El Progreso is located at a distance of 74 kilometers from the Capital City of Guatemala. El Rancho is the intersection on the road that leads to northern Guatemala, just to the departments of Baja and Altaverapaz; and Peten. Stop to use the bathroom, have a coffee or eat something before continuing to Copan Honduras. In this intersection we will take to the right towards the department of Chiquimula; on the left continue to Quirigua, Rio Dulce, Puerto Barrios and Peten. Again we will go to the left to reach this road to the border between Honduras and Guatemala.
We will arrive at the border of Guatemala with Honduras for the necessary border procedures. From there we will move to the archaeological site of Copán Ruinas declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980.
The period of greatest splendor was during the sixth and seventh centuries. It came to have a population of about 20,000 people, in an area of about 250 square kilometers.
The site is composed of several architectural sets:
The Main Ensemble: it was the nerve center of the Mayan city of Copan.
The Ball Game: it is very small compared to other ball games. Chichen Itza's is much bigger, for example. But it has great importance for Hondurans. So much so that it appears on the 1 lempira ticket. Its construction finished in the year 738.
The Hieroglyphic Staircase: this large staircase is covered to prevent deterioration and preserve its beauty, it is ten meters wide, with 62 steps. It has the longest known Mayan inscription, with 220 glyphs. But these glyphs are messy, since the staircase collapsed, and when it was rebuilt, they did not take into account the possible correct placement of the stones. So they are very misplaced, and the inscription could not be translated. ...more ...less
Day 2 : Quirigua
Location: Quirigua
Meals Included: Breakfast
Copan - Quirigua - Guatemala city
Quiriguá is an archaeological site belonging to the ancient Mayan civilization, located in the department of Izabal in the north-east of Guatemala. It is a medium-sized site, with an area of approximately 3 km², located along the lower course of the Motagua River, with its ceremonial center located 1 km from the north bank of the river.
During the Classic Period of the Mayan civilization (200-900 AD), Quiriguá was at the confluence of several important trade routes. The site was occupied from 200 d. C. and the construction of the acropolis began around 550 AD. C. An impressive construction boom began in the eighteenth century, until all construction activity was halted around 850 AD. C., with the exception of a brief period of reoccupation in the Early Postclassic period (c. 900 - c. 1200). Quiriguá shares its architectural and sculptural style with the nearby city of Copán, whose history is closely intertwined with that of Quirigua.
