Tour Overview

This road cycling tour of Thailand sees you navigate 810 snaking kilometers of tropical shoreline and consistent tarmac following the best parts of Thailand’s coastal range. Bangkok to Phuket cycling route swaps the Gulf of Thailand’s sweeping sands for the clear blue waters of the Andaman Sea. Hang up your helmet, have your guides and mechanics service your road bike after each day while you relax on the warm sand and admire the sunset. Refuel on some of the freshest seafood in the region. The bike tour warms up on the quiet countryside of the East Coast, heading for the Southern Thailand beach town of Hua Hin and beyond. Highlights include stunning beach views and limestone peaks as we carve down and through Sam Roi Yot, Thailand’s first coastal National Park. Negotiate the rolling hills and steady climbs. Wrestle the twists and turns that mix up our cycling inland over the Isthmus of Kra to Thailand’s Western coastline and finally to the resort island of Phuket. Hit the road each morning to race through Thailand's lush greenery and past idyllic beaches. This well-paved ride is flat, fast, and exhilarating, punctuated by lush scenery and local flavor. A consistent cycling holiday favorite; road cyclists come for the challenge and fall in love with the culture. As warm hospitality, like sunshine, is practically guaranteed in this “Land of Smiles.” Scenic and challenging, this road biking tour encompasses it all. This tour is 100% on road, and we designed the route with road bikers in mind. If you are looking for a more leisurely ride with more stops at sites, then please consider our Cycling Coastal Thailand tour that is along the same route. We start with a transfer out of Bangkok to avoid the dangers of riding through a very busy metropolis. The first half of the ride is on flat roads, mainly following the beach. The total distance is 789 km in eight riding days. Some of the distances are quite long, but the roads are smooth, making it an achievable distance on a road bike. The trip is fully supported, and your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty. This makes a tremendous difference, as does the constant supply of cold drinks, ice, and fresh fruit.

Suitability: Fitness, of course, will be a huge asset on those long days and on the undulating hills. The tour is fully supported, and the bus is always close at hand for those that find the riding too difficult.

Biking Conditions: The roads are 100% tarmac and in good condition. There are some hills, mostly rolling with the exception of the steep but short hills in Phuket.

Highlights

  • Explore Yot (300 hundred peaks) National Park, known for numerous caves, beaches, and limestone cliffs of Sam Roi.

  • Depicted by a series of white sandy beaches surrounded by forested hills, Khao Lak is a place worth visiting and exploring.

  • Stunning beach views and limestone peaks as we carve down and through Sam Roi Yot, Thailand’s first coastal National Park.

  • View the thailand's lush greenery and past idyllic beaches.

Day 1 : Petchaburi - Hua Hin

Location: Phetchaburi, Hua Hin

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Putahracsa

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

We meet at a Bangkok hotel before we transfer to the start of our ride in Petchaburi (approximately 2 hours). This ride is a gentle start to the trip as we head out of Petchaburi and into rural Thailand, along roads flanked by paddy fields and palm trees. We then ride along the beach into Cha-am and on to the beach resort town of Hua Hin. The town is closely tied to Thai royalty. The last 20 km is on a main road, but there is a wide shoulder to ride. If the traffic proves to be too heavy, this section can be transferred. We top off our day with a seafood dinner in the centre of town.

Ride: 68km

Elevation: +194m

Descent: -194m

Day 2 : Hua Hin - Prachuap Khiri Khan

Location: Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Hadthong Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We head out of Hua Hin, part of the way taking advantage of a new cycle lane, towards Sam Roi Yot (300 hundred peaks) National Park. This park has spectacular limestone formations and freshwater marshes in between the peaks. We ride on quiet backroads along beaches with striking limestone peaks as our background. After the park, we have a short ride on the main road, about 20 km, before heading back to the coast, passing many small villages. The final section is along the beach to Prachuap Khiri Khan. The selected hotel has some great views and, as the town is well known for having some the finest seafood in Thailand, we’ll feast on the local specialties at dinner.

Ride: 113km

Elevation: +584m

Descent: -579m

Day 3 : Prachuap Khiri Khan - Ban Krut

Location: Prachuap Khiri Khan, Ban Krut Beach

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Baan Grood Arcadia

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We leave the hotel and ride along the beachfront road for about 12 km before hitting the main road. This section is 9 km. We are now well away from the main tourist areas, and the roads are quiet and in good condition. We head towards a serene beach and our nature-friendly boutique resort. Time to relax in a hammock and listen to the surf.

Ride: 71km

Elevation: +344m

Descent: -344m

Day 4 : Ban Krut Rest Day

Location: Ban Krut Beach

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Baan Grood Arcadia

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This is a rest day – you’ve earned it. Spend it relaxing at the beach, wandering around the fishing village of Ban Krut, or taking a dip in one of the two salt water pools at the resort.

Day 5 : Ban Krut - Chumpon

Location: Ban Krut Beach, Chumphon

Accommodation: Resort

Accommodation Name: Nana Beach Resort

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

With legs rested, it’s time to do some serious kilometres. We ride 112 km on quiet side roads with very little traffic. Our route sticks to the coast, giving us views of the sea to the left and rugged mountains on our right. We are passing through Thailand’s narrowest part as the border with Burma is less than 20 km away at some points. We end the ride just north of Chumpon, at another secluded and quiet beach.

Ride: 112km

Elevation: +693m

Descent: -693m

Day 6 : Chumpon - Ranong

Location: Chumphon, Ranong

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Tinidee Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We cross the Isthmus of Kra, which separates the Gulf of Thailand from the Adaman Sea, and is just 44 km wide at its narrowest point. We head west for about 60 km on an undulating road that cuts through the lush jungle-clad mountains that surround this area. The hills and the twists and turns in the road make for some varied riding. As there are few roads through the mountains we spend most of the day on the main road, however there is a wide shoulder. There is a climb of about 3 km starting at the Pun Ya Ban Waterfall, and then it is downhill and flat all the way to the town of Ranong. This is a spa, fishing and border town, which makes for an interesting vibe.

Ride: 140km

Elevation: +1142m

Descent: -1134m

Day 7 : Ranong - Khuraburi

Location: Ranong, Khuraburi Learning Center

Accommodation: Resort

Accommodation Name: Kuraburi Greenview Resort

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We ride through valleys today, so the road will be rolling, but there are no extreme climbs, just enough ascents and descents to make the ride interesting. We pass many villages and children waving and yelling out farang, farang (foreigner). After some great views, the ride ends in a lovely little resort nestled in a valley and surrounded by lush tropical rain forest.

Ride: 128km

Elevation: +1052m

Descent: -981m

Day 8 : Khuraburi - Khao Lak

Location: Khuraburi Learning Center, Khao Lak

Accommodation: Resort

Accommodation Name: Apsara Beachfront Resort & Villa

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We continue our journey south, riding from valley to valley towards picturesque Khao Lak. We have little choice but to take the main road for half of today's cycle. The road flattens out a bit as we reach Takua Pa, a former Portuguese settlement. The region was an important tin-dredging centre in the first half of the 20th century, but there remains little evidence of the mining as rubber plantations have covered the dredged land. We next ride through one of the areas devastated by the 2004 Tsunami. You’ll be amazed to see how quickly this area has bounced back and been rebuilt. We arrive early to the hotel, so you can spend time in the amazing pool this afternoon.

Ride: 72km

Elevation: +518m

Descent: -587m

Day 9 : Khao Lak - Phuket

Location: Khao Lak, Phuket

Accommodation: Resort

Accommodation Name: Nai Yang Beach Resort

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The last leg of the tour is to the tropical paradise of Phuket, the largest island, as well as a province of Thailand. There are a couple of small hills to conquer before we leave Khao Lak, but then it’s flat all the way down to Phang Nga and Phuket. This road is in excellent condition, and you’ll make good time towards our resort on Nai Yang Beach. Phuket is connected by a bridge to the mainland, and we’ll stop for a celebratory picture before riding on to our hotel.

Ride: 106km

Elevation: +741m

Descent: -743m

  • What is the fitness level required to do this tour?

This tour is classed as ENDURANCE. The ideal ride for the puncheur, the all-rounder, the enthusiast. Endurance tours encompass rolling hills, long rides on flat terrain, and a challenging climb, or several. Day to day variation in difficulty keeps things interesting and won’t force you to choose between enjoying the ride and experiencing an exciting destination. Endurance tours are best suited for cyclists able to handle over 120 kilometers on smooth terrain, or a shorter distance with average daily climbing under 1,000 meters.

You should be able to reach and maintain 25 - 28km per hour speeds for an hour at a time. Ride three times a week to build fitness and go for longer, multi-hour rides on the weekend. We recommend joining a local cycling club to stay motivated.

  • Do I need to have travel insurance?

Yes! SpiceRoads insists that all clients must take out good travel insurance before joining one of our tours. There are inherent risks involved in cycling and mountain biking and we will not be liable for your medical expenses or evacuation in case of an accident. This insurance must include adequate coverage for any personal accident, medical expenses, injury, death and repatriation. Insurance should also provide coverage for cancellations or curtailment of the holiday. Clients should also ensure that there are no exclusion clauses limiting protection for any dangerous or unusual activities that might be included in their tour. If you join the tour without adequate insurance you may be disallowed from continuing on the tour without the right of refund. Clients are solely responsible for arranging their insurance and they should ensure that they are covered for the full duration of their tour. Your tour leader will ask for copies of your insurance before allowing you to join the tour. This protects both you and us.

  • Is the trip guaranteed to depart and does it require a minimum number of people?

There is a minimum number of participants (usually 2) required to enable the trip to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to Depart'. Once a trip is guaranteed to depart you are free to book your flights and make other travel arrangements. If the trip status is ‘Limited’ will mean we have only a small number of spaces available for booking. If you are unsure about the trip status, please contact us.

  • Why hire a bike from SpiceRoads?

SpiceRoads bikes are never just "fit for duty" but a key component of our riders’ tour experience and satisfaction. For tours with bike hire option, renting one of our bikes saves hassle, not to mention precious luggage allowance. All SpiceRoads tours use well-known makes of mountain, hybrid or road bikes (depending on the tour) with lightweight alloy frames, 24- to 27-speed gearing, v-brakes or disc brakes and Shimano components. Mountain bikes all have front suspension. We renew bikes in our fleet every two seasons. When in use, our bikes are well-cared for, including full service before each trip and daily cleaning while on tour. SpiceRoads tour support vehicles carry plenty of spares and extra tubes for every emergency.

  • Do you have E-Bikes?

Electric "pedal assist" e-bikes are available on select tours. E-bikes can help manage long distances and climbing terrain through the use of a pedal-activated electric motor. Unlike other e-bikes, "pedal assistedr" e-bikes feel more natural to the rider. We recommend e-bikes for riders interested in tours that might normally be too challenging for them, or for groups of riders with mixed ability. E-bikes provide assistance for long distance or more challenging terrain, but they can’t do all the work for you! Always chose a tour within the range of your own abilities to ensure your own enjoyment when exploring a new destination. Contact us for a complete list of e-bike available tours.

  • What do I need to bring if I rent a SpiceRoads bike?

Bikes rented for tours always come with a helmet, a single water bottle cage, and a standard saddle. If you prefer to bring your own saddle (just the saddle, not the seat post), additional water bottle cage, or SPD pedals, we will fit them to your bike for the tour. Don’t forgot to bring your shoes and cleats if you bring SPD pedals! Women specific seats are recommended for longer tours. We have a limited supply of gel seat covers to soften the ride, and of strap-on toe cages. Please enquire about adding these during your booking.

  • Do you have details of the SpiceRoads fleet?

In Thailand we have a fleet of Verve city bikes, TREK 4300 and X-Caliber 7 mountain bikes, TREK 7.2 X, FX 3 and 7200 hybrid bikes and Trek 2.1 C, Domane 2.0, Lexa SL and carbon Émonda S5 road bikes. We also carry Giant 2019 Explore E+ 3 e-bikes. Our bicycles are available in sizes ranging from 13 inches to 22 1/2 inches or 47 cm to 62 cm. Please note that a certain frame model is not guaranteed. In Bangkok and Chiang Mai, baby seats, tag-alongs, and child bikes for children are available. In Bangkok the single-wheeled tag-along bike attach to the seat-post of an adult bike, allowing a child to pedal along behind the adult. There's no age limit to the tag-along bike, but there is a 36 kg weight limit. Bike hire is include in the tour price for short tours, while longer tours offer bike hire as a supplement, as many riders opt to bring their own bike for our cycling tours. Depending on the destination, length of tour, and type of bike, hire costs vary.
