Tour Overview

Our Thailand Heritage by Bicycle tour takes you back in time on a route paved by kingdom builders. The Chakri dynasty established the current capital of Bangkok or, as known by locals, Krung Thep, our starting point of the tour. From here we head north to the former Kingdom of Ayutthaya, once one of the wealthiest cities in the East during its heyday. The 33 kings of Ayutthaya ruled more than four centuries before the city was conquered and destroyed by the Burmese.

Cycling amongst the ruins we'll learn how the authoritarian god-kings of Ayutthaya ruled with an iron fist. Riding north through the rice basket of Thailand, we arrive at what is considered to be the first true Thai kingdom, Sukhothai. Under the Phra Ruang dynasty, the Thai alphabet was created, and Theravada Buddhism was established as the main religion in the short 130 years of power.

Riding further northward, the terrain becomes more rugged as mountains flank our path on both sides as enter what was once known as the Lanna Kingdoms. Here we'll cycle through the land once ruled by the Tai people and see their influence in the recently excavated ruins of the Haripunchai Kingdom before arriving at the northern capital of Chiang Mai founded in 1298.

This tour is for those who wish to see Thailand's rural countryside and explore the rich history of Siam, all while enjoying an active holiday. The scenery is ever changing as we start our ride though the emerald paddy fields of central Thailand where the roads are mainly flat, then continue with some undulating terrain and a few gentle climbs in the northern hills, before arriving in the cultural city of Chiang Mai.

The trip is fully supported, and your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty. This makes a tremendous difference, as does the constant supply of cold drinks and fresh fruit.

Suitability: You can expect a fairly gentle ride each day with none of the distances being overly long. There are a few small hills and some dirt trails, but these can be tackled by anyone with even a moderate amount of fitness. The emphasis on this tour is Thailand’s history, culture, and scenery, all off the beaten track.

Biking Conditions: This trip is mainly on tarmac roads with a few days where we will have hard packed dirt trails – no off road experience is required. An air-conditioned support bus travels behind the group to supports us, and participants can cycle as much or as little as they like and still enjoy the same views as the rest of the group.

This morning we cycle through the remains of the first kingdom of the Thai people. Pre-dating Ayutthaya, though there is some overlap between the kingdoms, Sukhothai was established in 1238 and reigned until 1438. The story of Sukhothai was found in a stone inscription which describes the relationship between the king and his people as a father and son, the strong belief in Buddhism and the land as rich with natural resources, “in water, there are fish; in fields, there is rice." From this inscription also developed the Thai alphabet into the one currently used. Our riding through the sites will be leisurely as we explore the many temples and ruins and learn about like in Siam during the Sukhothai era and how it influenced current Thai culture. In the afternoon we beat the heat of the day with a transfer to the quaint town of Phrae, where we enter a different period of Thai history, the Kingdom of Lanna. We'll visit Khum Chao Luang, the resident of the last ruler of Phrae, bulit in a mixed Thai-European style of architecture known as "Gingerbread," popular during the reign of King Rama V, then in the evening we delve into a very important aspect of being Thai, food! Our guide will take you to explore the famous Phratu Chai Market known for local delicacies such as the Kanom Jeen Nam Ngiew (a northern style noodle soup) and Kanom Tom (a dessert made from coconut and palm sugar).

Here, we explore Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, which still has the fortress walls that protected the people as well as the temple that contains a Buddha relic that is worshiped by Thais all over the country. • Why hire a bike from SpiceRoads?

SpiceRoads bikes are never just "fit for duty" but a key component of our riders’ tour experience and satisfaction. For tours with bike hire option, renting one of our bikes saves hassle, not to mention precious luggage allowance. All SpiceRoads tours use well-known makes of mountain, hybrid or road bikes (depending on the tour) with lightweight alloy frames, 24- to 27-speed gearing, v-brakes or disc brakes and Shimano components. Mountain bikes all have front suspension. We renew bikes in our fleet every two seasons. When in use, our bikes are well-cared for, including full service before each trip and daily cleaning while on tour. SpiceRoads tour support vehicles carry plenty of spares and extra tubes for every emergency.

  • Do you have E-Bikes?

Electric "pedal assist" e-bikes are available on select tours. E-bikes can help manage long distances and climbing terrain through the use of a pedal-activated electric motor. Unlike other e-bikes, "pedal assistedr" e-bikes feel more natural to the rider. We recommend e-bikes for riders interested in tours that might normally be too challenging for them, or for groups of riders with mixed ability. E-bikes provide assistance for long distance or more challenging terrain, but they can’t do all the work for you! Always chose a tour within the range of your own abilities to ensure your own enjoyment when exploring a new destination. Contact us for a complete list of e-bike available tours.

  • What do I need to bring if I rent a SpiceRoads bike?

Bikes rented for tours always come with a helmet, a single water bottle cage, and a standard saddle. If you prefer to bring your own saddle (just the saddle, not the seat post), additional water bottle cage, or SPD pedals, we will fit them to your bike for the tour. Don’t forgot to bring your shoes and cleats if you bring SPD pedals! Women specific seats are recommended for longer tours. We have a limited supply of gel seat covers to soften the ride, and of strap-on toe cages. Please enquire about adding these during your booking.

  • Do you have details of the SpiceRoads fleet?

In Thailand we have a fleet of Verve city bikes, TREK 4300 and X-Caliber 7 mountain bikes, TREK 7.2 X, FX 3 and 7200 hybrid bikes and Trek 2.1 C, Domane 2.0, Lexa SL and carbon Émonda S5 road bikes. We also carry Giant 2019 Explore E+ 3 e-bikes. Our bicycles are available in sizes ranging from 13 inches to 22 1/2 inches or 47 cm to 62 cm. Please note that a certain frame model is not guaranteed. There's no age limit to the tag-along bike, but there is a 36 kg weight limit. Bike hire is include in the tour price for short tours, while longer tours offer bike hire as a supplement, as many riders opt to bring their own bike for our cycling tours. Depending on the destination, length of tour, and type of bike, hire costs vary.
