Day 1 : Arrival And Boat Trip At Lake Skadar

Location: Skadar Lake National Park

Accommodation: Homestay

Accommodation Name: Lake View Apartments or similar

Meals Included: Dinner

Arrival at Podgorica or Tivat. Transfer to Virpazar (arrivals from other locations are at an extra charge). Lake Skadar is one of five national parks in Montenegro and the largest lake in Southern Europe. Its tranquil waters, waterlilies, reeds and rushes offer a natural preserve for 270+ bird species: binoculars are essential! After check-in to our accommodation, we’ll take a private boat to enjoy the views and swim.

Day 2 : Canyoning At Rikavac

Location: Bar

Accommodation: Homestay

Accommodation Name: Lake View Apartments or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The cool rushing water of Rikavac Canyon is the perfect antidote to a hot summer’s day, while the ravine itself is just the right level of excitement for beginners, younger children and any wild nature lover! We transfer to the start point by car and spend the next 2 hours bouldering through this stunning natural playground. Be prepared for rock scrambling, jumping into deep natural pools and abseiling down rocky cliffs (the highest is 10 metres!). Wetsuits are provided as well as experienced, certified local guides.

Buzzing from our adventure, we’ll come down to visit nearby Stari Bar, an ancient ruined fortress city near the Adriatic Sea. We’ll enjoy a lunch of local delicacies and afterwards perhaps visit one of the oldest olive trees in the world or jump in the sea before heading back to Virpazar!

Canyoning time: 2 hours. Car time: 50 mins – 1.5 hours each way depending on traffic.

Day 3 : Kayaking On Lake Skadar

Location: Šćepan Polje, Skadar Lake National Park

Accommodation: Lodge

Accommodation Name: Camp Grab or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we transfer to the high mountains, but not before getting in a little adventure in the form of a short kayaking trip up Lake Skadar's Morača delta. We'll enjoy two blissful hours of kayaking, river swimming, rope swimming and a picnic at a secret riverside spot in the willow forest. Young ones will dunk themselves in hundreds of times while everyone will chat and chill in beautiful natural surroundings. By early afternoon, we’re on our way to Camp Grab – a long but stunning drive which takes us close to Bosnia!

Day 4 : White-Water Rafting, Tara River

Location: Tara

Accommodation: Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Time to visit the Tara Canyon for one of the most popular activities in Montenegro – whitewater rafting. The Tara is the longest Montenegrin river, flowing through Durmitor National Park down to the Bosnian border. Because of its untouched nature and amazingly high rocks above (the highest point of the canyon rises more than 1,300m above the river), it became part of UNESCO World Heritage.

The total length of the rafting route is roughly 7 km, from Brštanovica to Grab (the most attractive rapids on the entire river!) and it lasts around 2.5 hours, including some nice breaks for swimming in icy-cold river waters (don’t worry, we provide wetsuits!) and a lunch break. On the way back we’ll enjoy the view over Piva River Canyon, and beautiful Piva Lake, visiting one of the highest dams in the Balkan Peninsula.

Rafting time: 2-3 hours. Car time: 20 minutes. Accommodation: Camp Grab.

Day 5 : Explore & Discovery Day With Optional Sup-Boarding

Location: Piva Lake, Durmitor

Accommodation: Lodge, LodgeLodgeLodgeLodge

Accommodation Name: Etno Selo Nevidio or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A more relaxing day! After breakfast, we take a stunning drive down the Piva Canyon and on through the UNESCO heritage site, Durmitor National Park, to our accommodation at Zabljak. The scenery is as epic as it is astonishing!

We have the option to stop on the way to enjoy Piva Lake by boat and SUP board (1.5 hours at additional cost). Otherwise, it’s straight on for a picnic in the hobbit-like landscape, while gaping at the famous mountain views and wild horses.

Once at Žabljak, if time, we’ll visit one of the biggest natural attractions in all of Montenegro – Black Lake. Regarded as the most beautiful of 18 glacial lakes in this area, fringed by black pine forest, we’ll also have a chance to visit on our last day if that works better for the group.

Day 6 : Hiking At Durmitor National Park

Location: Durmitor

Accommodation: Lodge, LodgeLodge

Accommodation Name: Etno Selo Nevidio or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We promise a different activity each day and today it’s hiking! Your tour leader will help the group decide on the exact tour depending on variables like weather, group ability and preferences, but it is likely to be one of the following:

Dragišnica Valley Hike: suitable for cooler days and keener walkers, this 5 hour mostly downhill yomp passes through an astonishing valley situated under (unofficially) the longest single piece of rock in Europe – Boljska greda, more than 2.5km long and on average 900 metres high. If it’s late summer, forage wild strawberries and blueberries by the path.

Jablan Lake hike and swim. This stunning glacial lake in the foothills of mountain peak Crvena Greda takes just an hour to reach by foot. It passes through fairy-tale pine forests and pastures with abundant wildflowers. Take a dip in the exhilaratingly cool waters before enjoying a picnic and returning the same way. There's time after our hike to journey to the mysterious Devil’s Lake where the legend of its namesake will be revealed and even take a further dip. We’ll also marvel at the ancient stećci cemetery – a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site filled with medieval tombstones from the Bosnian empire and beyond. It’s a day of history, adventure, and natural beauty that you won’t want to miss!

Day 7 : Zip-Lining The Tara Bridge And Optional Via Ferrata

Location: Tara

Accommodation: Lodge, LodgeLodge

Accommodation Name: Etno Selo Nevidio or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After all your activities, it’s finally time for a slightly more relaxed day, and time to visit the Tara once for an optional “flight” over the world’s second-deepest canyon! The zip line is one of the longest in Europe and a real must-do for even the most junior thrill-seekers! Want something more challenging? How about conquering a Via Ferrata? 10 minutes away from Sedlo, at the very heart of the National Park Durmitor, this iron ladder takes you up the massif of Uvita Greda at an altitude of over 2000m and is available as an optional extra for €70pp.

Check out our Q&As

  • How hot is it in summer?

    April/May temperatures in Montenegro's south range from 20-30C. June/July – 25-35C. August – 30-35C. September – 20-30C. October – 15-25C. For the North of Montenegro, Albania and Kosovo, knock off 10C!

  • Is a stay of less than one week possible?

For our multi-activity holidays, in July and August, our minimum stay is one week. At other times, we can occasionally offer shorter stays (3 nights, 2 activities minimum) at our discretion. We do not arrange accommodation only breaks – sorry.

  • Can I pay for my holiday in a different currency?

Yes, but as Lloyds Bank UK somehow still does not offer Euro or Dollar account internet banking we prefer to arrange alternative currency payments via Paypal, for which there is a 3% surcharge.

  • Are the local guides on the tour English speaking?

Of course! All of our guides are fluent or near native in English and even in some other languages!

  • How is accommodation arranged?

We have hand-picked comfortable, characterful, locally-owned guesthouses that perfectly balance charm with comfort for all our holidays. We assume occupation of double/twin and family rooms unless otherwise specified. On each holiday page you will find an accommodation tab – get clicking and have a look!

  • Can you assist with pre or post tour accommodation?

Not directly, but we can give you some recommendations if needed!

  • What happens if a group doesn’t make its minimum required number of passengers?

We're flexible on that and open to tailor-made requests.

  • Are airport transfers included in this tour?

Yes, airport transfers to/from Podgorica/Tivat Airport are included in the price. Other locations require an extra fee charge.

  • Are vaccinations required for this tour?

There are no specific vaccinations required for your visit to Montenegro. The World Health Organisation recommends that all travellers be covered for diptheria, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, pertussis (whooping cough), polio, rubella, tuberculosis and varicella (chickenpox), regardless of their destination. You should also consider being vaccinated for hepatitis A. Since most vaccines don’t produce immunity until at least two weeks after they’re given, visit a physician at least six weeks before departure.

  • Do we need a car?

All transport is taken care of by us!

  • Are all entrance fees included in the price?

Yes, all entrance fees are included in the tour price.

  • Is there any free time to explore places during the tour?

During this holiday, there are no rest days, but we give our guests some free time each day to enjoy on their own!

  • Do you require a visa for this holiday?

No, no visa is needed if you're coming from the EU countries, US, UK, Australia, or Canada...

  • Can you cater for vegetarians or other specialist diets?

Vegetarian diets are easy to cater for, although the menu in rural areas of Montenegro can be limited. It is more difficult to follow a vegan diet in the north of Montenegro, which is mountainous and has a long-established food culture focused on meat and dairy, as pastoralist communities. We advise our vegan guests to bring some snacks which are high in protein to supplement what is provided.

  • How much travelling is involved on your trips?

We firmly believe that holiday time in the car should be kept to a minimum. No single journey is ever longer than 4 hours, and most transfer times between centres are less than 2 hours.

  • Are you insured for the activities you offer?

We have full liability insurance up to £ 5 million.

  • Is Undiscovered Balkans a UK company?

Undiscovered Balkans is the trading name for Undiscovered Montenegro Ltd, a fully-registered UK company, registered company number 06779866. Our Montenegrin company, Miela d.o.o handles our logistical operations in Montenegro, and in other territories, we partner together only with fully-licenced local suppliers and partners. Payment for our holidays is generally made in Sterling.

  • How expensive is eating out or buying food for self-catering?

Restaurants are great value – mains are generally € 5-10 and you should never pay more than € 2 for half a litre of beer. At the supermarket it’s even cheaper of course – a loaf of bread is 80 cents, milk is 60 cents.

  • Are flights included in this tour?

No, flights are not included in the price.

  • Do I need to bring any specialist gear?

Yes, you will need hiking shoes or sandals, a hat suitable for outdoor activities, rain jackets just in case, a reusable water bottle and a fleece. A head torch is also handy. If you book with us, we send you a list of appropriate clothing etc in a pre-arrival email a few weeks prior to your stay.

  • Is there a supplement for solo travellers?

    No.

  • Is the tour coach air conditioned?

    Yes.

  • What currencies are required for this tour?

Montenegro uses Euro (€) as its official currency.

  • What is the tipping policy?

Tipping in Montenegro is not obligatory, but rounding up the bill or leaving a small amount extra for good service is appreciated in restaurants and for other services.

  • Is there a limit to luggage that can be brought on the tour?

Not really, but we advise packing light.

  • Will I know the names and details of all the accommodation before I depart?

Of course, you'll get the trip note prior to your trip with all the necessary information.

  • Are there many mosquitos?

Like anywhere in the Mediterranean, mosquitos are around but there are never swarms of them. If you’re worried about bites, bring some repellent and some antihistamines too if you know you react badly to them (hard to buy locally). They are not generally a problem away from the coast.

  • Are all the relevant entry visa’s included in the price of the tour?

No, entry visas are not included in the tour price. However, citizens from the EU, US, UK, and Australia may be able to enter visa-free for up to 90 days.

  • Is free Wi-Fi available in the accommodation used?

In most cases wifi is available, but in some more remote locations or due to bad weather conditions, wifi might be unstable.

  • Are any meals included?

    Yes, all meals are included.

  • Are children permitted to take part in the tour?

Our recommended minimum age for this holiday is 8, but we can make exceptions for exceptional kids! Please do bare in mind that activity level is moderate and that some fitness level is required for kids too.

  • Will passengers from another country be participating in the tour?

That's hard to answer, it truly varies, but the majority of our guests are British.

  • What is the maximum group size?

    8

  • Will there be an escort accompanying this tour?

Your Tour Leader is both your pre-departure contact and your on-location guide for all or most of the week (on occasion, they will hand over to another experienced member of our team for a day or two’s activities). Once you have booked, all questions about the holiday should be directed to your Tour Leader.

  • What is the standard of the hotels on this tour?

    3 stars

  • What is the fitness level required to do this tour?

This moderate-rated holiday is perfect for active families who enjoy outdoor adventures such as hiking, kayaking, and canyoning. All group members must have a reasonable level of fitness, be able to swim and participate in tours that last 4-5 hours. The kayaking and rafting days require adults to paddle for younger children. Accommodation is basic in remote areas, and there will be less downtime than on resort-style holidays. Expect some car time between locations, which may involve twisty mountain roads.

  • Who will be my travelling companions on the tour?

While we cannot say for certain who your travelling companions will be, many of our guests are from the UK and some holidays may be fully booked by a group of friends or family. We believe in creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all guests to share experiences and create lasting memories.

  • What documents will I receive before I travel?

You will receive a trip note with all the necessary information!

  • Is any experience necessary for any of the activities, for example the kayaking?

No experience is necessary for any of the activities – our kayaking, rafting and canyoning guides have BCU or equivalent qualifications and all our other guides are equally experienced and qualified in their fields. Full safety equipment is provided where necessary. The exception is our kayaking holidays; these are not recommended for novice paddlers.

  • Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?

While it depends on the specific holiday and accommodations available, we always strive to meet the needs of our guests. If a guest requires a solo room for any reason, we will do our best to provide one, but if such accommodation is not available, it may be necessary to share a room with another solo traveller of the same gender.

  • Will the accommodation included meet local health and safety regulations?

Of course, ensuring that our guests have safe and comfortable accommodation is of utmost importance to us. All the accommodation included in our holidays meets local health and safety regulations and while it may be simple, it is always clean and equipped with all necessary basic features.

  • How long has the tour company been trading?

Undiscovered Balkans is part of Undiscovered Montenegro, a UK-registered adventure travel company founded in 2008 by British husband and wife team, Emma and Ben Heywood.

  • Can I join the tour once it has departed?

While we appreciate your interest in joining our tour, unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate guests who wish to join after the departure date. We highly recommend booking in advance to secure your spot and ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience.

  • Am I contributing to any charity by booking the tour?

At our tour company, we believe that responsible travel not only benefits the environment but also the local community, which is why we are committed to our "Book to Give Back" motto. By choosing to go on our tours, you are not only experiencing the best of what the destination has to offer, but you are also supporting the local economy through our "Going Local" initiative.

  • Is there WiFi at our accommodation?

We have free WiFi throughout all of our other accommodation options. Please be aware however, that in remote areas reception can be sporadic.

  • What happens if I need to change my holiday date once I’ve booked?

If it's early enough for us to update the chn

  • How fit do I have to be to enjoy the activities?

In all cases, please refer to the activity level rating provided on each holiday page, and the “activity levels explained” tab on the “About” menu. As a rule of thumb, you don’t need to be a marathon runner or champion athlete to enjoy most of our holidays (those who regularly push themselves to their physical limits would find our trips “soft”!), but you do need to be in good health and have a re

  • Are your holidays suitable for young children?

Active families love our holidays – you can read what guests with children have to say about us via reviews on Responsible Travel and Tripadvisor. The minimum age for most of our holidays is 7 years but we can make exceptions for kids as young as 5 years old if your child is active, adventurous, can swim and has experience of hiking for at least 7 miles including some uphill stretches. Great organization and a wonderful tour

10-Aug-2021

Undiscovered Montenegro have created some wonderful tours and the Family multi activity trip certainly did not disappoint. We would thoroughly recommend [it] to any family seeking an active week.

Amazing family holiday

14-Aug-2020

Impeccably organised, including the kids’ (age 7 and 9) first experience of canyoning, white water rafting and canoeing…Ben, Emma and Vuk are all amazing hosts and guides. The itinerary is very well-designed to include plenty of activities but also enough downtime so you never feel rushed. The accommodation has been carefully selected – simple but comfortable in some amazing locations with friendly staff and great food.

Brilliant adventure holiday in stunning surroundings!

29-Aug-2022

The ultimate adventure holiday in Montenegro was by far the best holiday we have been on! My active 14 and 16 year olds enjoyed every single day. We did Kayaking, Canyoning, hiking, water rafting and mountain biking in the most beautiful surroundings. From turquoise green rivers and warm tranquil lakes to stunning mountain views, we were never disappointed. The accommodations just kept getting better as the week went on too, every time we arrived at the next place there was always a wow factor! Camp grab was definitely our favourite though right on the river with its chocolate box wooden cabins. The food on the trip was great too, the amazing intimate farmhouse lunch and dinners in Virpazar were very authentic, generous and tasty. The food in Camp Grab was an excellent standard for a camp site. I would definitely recommend this holiday for any family who has an adventurous spirit!

Fantastic family adventure – we have just spent a week with Undiscovered Montenegro travelling as a family with 2 teenagers (aged 17 and 15) and our 8 year old. It was one of the best holidays we had!
