Day 1 : Arrival - International Flight Into Lima, Peru

Location: Lima

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Ramada Wyndham Costa del Sol

Arrival & landing day into Lima, an evening to relax and prepare for your Peru adventure that lays ahead!

Day 2 : Arrival In Cusco, Transfer To Hotel

Location: Cusco

Accommodation Name: Cusco

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Head to the Lima airport for your transfer flight to Cusco. After settling in, head out for your day tour of the former capital of the Inca empire, which reigned from the 13th to 16th centuries after conquering the Killke settlement on the same location. Remember: you will be at 11,000 feet (c. 3,400 m) above sea level, so take it easy and remember to drink lots of water. Take a walk through the plaza — if the weather is beautiful, it's a perfect place to sit and have a cup of coca tea while adjusting to the elevation. In the evening, take the opportunity to experience Cusco's celebrated culinary heritage at a local restaurant.

Day 3 : Cusco: Free Day To Explore

Location: Cusco

Accommodation Name: Cusco

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today you are free to explore Cusco and the surrounding ancient ruins. Since Cusco was designed by the Incas as a city for walking, start your exploration of the narrow stone alleyways on foot. Suggested activities include: Visit the Coricancha, also known as 'The Temple of the Sun.' The temple was built by the Incan Emperor Pachacutec (1438 - 1572), and after the arrival of the Spaniards became the basis for the construction of the Santo Domingo Convent. See the Cathedral, the most imposing monument in the central Plaza de Armas and a repository for Cusco's colonial art. Its construction lasted for almost 100 years, beginning in 1560 and ending in 1654. Walk to Sacsayhuamán and next-door Quenqo, both archaeological complexes used mostly for religious and agricultural rituals, located 2.5 miles (4 km) from the city of Cusco. Built by the Killke people, Sacsayhuamán is a marvel of ancient architecture, a monolithic fortress built from giant blocks of stone, the origins and assembly of which remain a mystery. Discover the elaborate Puca Pucara ruins—an architectural complex of alleged military use with multiple plazas, baths, aqueducts, walls, and towers. It is believed that the entourage of the Incan emperor used it while he stayed at Tambomachay, the elaborate estate and baths nearby. Explore San Blas, an old bohemian quarter famous for its picturesque white walls, blue doors, and creative artisan community. Experience the legendary Mercado Central de San Pedro, a large and diverse market famous for its mouth-watering juices, home-style meals, medicinal herb stalls, and rows of various meats, loaves of bread, vegetables, and other necessities. Eat lunch at a local Peruvian restaurant and sample local flavors and cooking techniques—crackling pork, pickled vegetables, seasonal flavors, bread baked in earthen ovens, roasted vegetables, and sweet donuts make for a delicious and filling meal.

I'm a traveler success manager at Kimkim, and I booked part of my recent trip to Peru with James at Unu Raymi Expeditions. I had been itching to check out the Amazon rainforest but knew that I wouldn't have a lot of time to explore during my recent trip to South America. James helped me plan a great 3-day trip to Huitoto Lodge Huitoto Lodge is situated on the bank of its very own oxbow lake, slightly removed from the powerful Madre de Dios River. This location affords the lodge a great amount of privacy, peace, and access to pristine jungle areas. Each day, I had the opportunity to participate in different excursions with my guide, Efrain, including jungle walks, birding, fishing, and caiman-watching. In the downtime between activities, I enjoyed reading and relaxing in the peace of the lodge. During my stay, I also had the pleasure of meeting the owners of the lodge, Flor and Gilberto. The two built the lodge together to share the beauty of the region with travelers, and to protect the land and its inhabitants in perpetuity. They take pride in providing great experiences for all of their guests. I should mention Flor also helps out in the kitchen and is an excellent cook. My favorite memory from my stay is of the boat trip I took around the island located in the middle of the oxbow lake. Efrain, Elmer (the boat driver), and I had the lake all to ourselves, so we had the opportunity to see an incredible amount of flora and fauna without interruption. On our way around the island, Efrain pointed out one spider monkey and two howler monkeys. He said that Flor and Gilberto had rescued these monkeys from illegal trafficking, and had given them a home on this island where they could remain free, but also protected from territorial monkeys in the mainland jungle areas. I loved seeing these monkeys playing in the wild! I feel very fortunate that I had the opportunity to experience this unique lodge and meet some of the passionate people behind its success.
