Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and one of the world’s oldest cities: known as Olispio by the Romans, settled by the Visigoths and the Arabs before becoming the base for the “Discoveries’ – Columbus, Magellan and Vasco de Gama all set sail from here. An earthquake in 1755 destroyed many buildings and dramatically brought an end to this powerful empire. The UNESCO-listed Jerónimos Monastery and Tower of Belem still stands and worth a visit, as is the Alfama district for ‘fado’ (music) – or simply enjoy a stroll through the streets of this beautiful city. Grading

GRADE 4
The cycling is moderate to challenging (4) grade with daily cycling distances from 30 to 60km / 18.5 to 37mi over diverse terrain – from relatively flat to hilly. There will be some dirt roads as well as the occasional rocky path used during this tour. The accent is on keeping a relaxed pace to take in all of the attractions, with time to stop and take photos. It is considered suitable for cyclists with a good to high level of fitness. Minor roads with reduced traffic are customary on this trip and we recommend that you familiarise yourself with road cycling in light traffic in order to participate. *For safety reasons, we insist that cycle helmets be included as a compulsory item on your equipment list.
CYCLING THE CAMINO - All Camino cycling routes have some demanding parts requiring some technical skills and physical preparation. Some have signposted detours for cyclists but in the main cyclists continue along the Camino, having to get off bikes to avoid obstacles and walkers. The Portuguese 'Central' route is more demanding than the Portuguese Coastal route and in Spain - mainly due to signposting (it's not as well prepared for cyclists as in Spain) and the terrain is more marked.

Portuguese Camino Cycle - Lisbon to Porto

Do you like gravel or MTB bike riding? Then this is the trip for you. Do you only like road bike riding? This isn’t the trip for you. While there are sections on smooth backroads and bike paths, there are many sections on cobblestones, single track, forest trails, lumpy, bumpy and rocky paths. Some of these trails will be too steep or too rocky to ride and you will need to push your bike up these sections. There will also be times (mostly on day 1), where you will need to carry your bike up and down the stairs of flyovers of railway line crossings. There will also be times where the gps/Camino trail takes you down one way streets. There will also be a few times when the gps track differs from the Camino trail markers - we defaulted to following the Camino trail markers. The challenge is worth it. Experiencing different scenery, visiting interesting towns, meeting walkers (we didn’t meet any other riders). ...more ...less

Fantastic experience and best way to do the Camino on a bike.

Portuguese Camino Cycle - Lisbon to Porto

9 Oct 2023

We travelled the Camino from Lisbon to Porto on bicycles on their self guided tour. Online tracks were provided for each daily section of the Camino we travelled, luggage transferred to the next prearranged hotel. All we carried was whatever we required for the day, food, water, rain gear. Overall the hotels met our expectations, some days the tracks were hard to ride and we needed to unload and push our bikes through the difficult sections. Nothing insurmountable, so some character building along the way. It was a memorable trip. ...more ...less

We chose electric mountain bikes. As over 60's recreational cyclists only, this was the only feasible option for us. That said, it was still very tough, but it was an adventure and a great experience.

The bikes were great. We were VERY happy to have Ebikes, as this is hilly area. The lodging was a mix. One was incredible, one was so-so & most were more hotel than quaint accommodations. The terrain was often gravel, slick and loose cobblestone on steep up or down hills. ...more ...less
