Tour Overview

While Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia share the same Baltic coastline, the contrasting unique characters of these three countries will become evident as you follow this incredibly scenic cycling route from Vilnius to Tallinn. From the three capitals - Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn - to the many small villages that have changed little over time, this guided cycling experience along low traffic roads and dedicated cycle paths will showcase the diverse cultures, World Heritage sites and mainly flat landscapes that make travelling in this region so different to anywhere else in Europe. Discover the island castle at Trakai, enter the previously off-limits Curonian Spit, a wild pre-historic sand dune peninsula, and marvel at the pilgrimage sight of thousands of crosses of every size and design imaginable at the Hill of Crosses in northern Lithuania. Crossing into Latvia, dip your toes in the Baltic Sea at the white sandy beaches of Jurmula and on the island of Saaremaa, visit Latvia's oldest Church and pay homage at a bicycle museum before heading into Estonia. We'll stop at Saaremaa, famous for its Bishop's Castle, before reaching the Estonian capital of Tallinn, where the trip concludes.

Highlights

  • Cycling on the beautiful Estonian island of Saaremaa

  • Discovering the small towns and villages en route

  • Exploring the historic centres of Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn

  • The coastal scenery of the Baltic coast and the wildness of the national parks

  • Soaking up the hospitality of comfortable hotels

Grading

INTRODUCTORY TO MODERATE – GRADE 2
The trip requires a reasonable level of fitness to fully participate in the cycling. Daily biking routes are mainly on low traffic roads and cycle paths range from 30 to 58km/18.5 to 36mi. The terrain is varied and rolling with some gradual hills on some riding days (some steep ups and downs in the Gauja River valley) and dead flat most of the tour. The walking in the capital towns is along cobbled streets. The group travels at approx. 20 km per hour with several stops. In some places there will be small, rolling hills eg on Day 1, but normally it’s flat. It can be windy on some days, especially at the coast.

What You Carry

During the cycle day you carry your daily requirements in the pannier provided with the bike. This may include your lunch, wet weather gear, mobile phone and water. A small daypack which can be kept inside the pannier is useful for sightseeing.

A great way to see 3 countries and 3 capitals. Our guide Romas was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and so we learnt a huge amount about the culture, history and politics of this region. Hotels were of a very good standard and variety in type.

The Baltic countries are beautiful and reasonably flat for cycling. It’s very easy to enjoy what’s offered by these proud countries. A total revelation to us.

Very good introduction to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Nice balance between cycling and coach journey. Both guides and the coach driver were wonderful with a good sense of humor and an excellent knowledge of the areas traveled through. Really enjoyed the trip and found it to be excellent value.

It was simply magic to be riding through three totally different countries, taking in the picturesque countryside and hearing the history of so many of the places that we rode through from our guide Romas - he has such interesting and wide knowledge of the countries which made the trip as much of a sightseeing trip as it was a bike tour - and I personally can't thank him enough. I truly hadn't realised what beautiful countries all three are. Our bikes were so comfortable that we merely got on them and off we went on our discovery tour - no complaints there! The riding was, as the trip notes said, introductory to moderate - some people had not been on a bike for some time but managed the trip just fine - just one hill which tested the best of us! It was fine to get off the bike and walk and I did!! When travelling long distances we merely hopped in our comfortable bus - complete with trailer full of bikes attached - and relaxed in comfort and listened to Romas' commentary - always so much to be learned from him about the landscape and people as we travelled along. Our days were filled with beautiful vistas of country and coastal areas, medieval towns, castles, churches, museums - so many memories to take away with us all. We were assured of a good nights sleep in excellent accommodation with more than adequate breakfasts to get us on the road for another days adventure of riding in the Baltic countries. Thanks to guides Romas and Jana and the two bus drivers (whose names escape me). This was a fabulous tour, I loved every day of it - and I would say to anyone considering the tour. - JUST DO IT!!

This trip was excellent and well managed from the first booking to the completion. The bike was better than any I have had on previous trips as it was reasonably light and easy to manage compared to some e-bikes. The guide Minde was also excellent.

We had a lovely time on the Treasures of the Baltic’s trip! Our guide (Romas) was extremely knowledgeable about the history of all 3 countries as well as facts and information on many subjects! He and our driver (Valdas) were excellent and very professional! The cities (Vilnius, Riga & Tallin are each lovely and different so this added to the enjoyment of our travels! The landscape in between the cities is similar but there was variety in the places we stopped as we travelled. This is a unique part of Europe with its poignant and long history of being conquered by many countries! We very much enjoyed learning about the history and visiting a part of Europe we hadn’t seen before!
