What You Carry

As the trip is fully supported with your luggage transferred between hotels, you only need to carry your daily requirements in your day pack. This will generally include water, snacks, wet weather gear and your camera. Please note you will need to carry your luggage for a short distance at Ostuni train station.

Grading

The walking is introductory to moderate (2) grade with daily walks between 3 and 4 hours. The accent is on keeping a steady pace with time to stop and take photos (subject to weather conditions). You will need a reasonable level of fitness to participate fully in this adventure. We recommend that you have some previous experience of trekking.
Waymarking - there are no official walking trails maintained by the government in Puglia nor waymarking. We have carefully constructed walking routes on mainly dirt paths and along rural trails but from time to time the farmers who also use these tracks may asphalt them. The maps are not of the same standard you would find in other walking destinations. However the countryside is wonderfully suited for walking and carefully reviewing the notes and visualising the route before you set out will optimise your walking and navigational experience.

Mode of Transport

Private transfers are provided as noted, with public transportation not included. Luggage transfer is available except on Day 3 from Lecce to Ostuni, where you take your luggage on the train.

Walking in Puglia

The trip was well-organised, took us to some fabulous places and we all (we were a group of four) enjoyed it immensely. The walking was relatively easy and the trip notes excellent. Would highly recommend.

Walking in Puglia

11 Oct 2018

We have just completed the self guided walk thru Puglia. It has been a great experience. Accommodation in Lecce, Ostuni, Alberobello and Matera were great. The guided Matera walk was amazing, and all walks and dinners were too. And transfers happened when you said they would. This is a very good tour. Thank you.

Walking in Puglia

12 Jun 2018

Self-guided Walking in Puglia makes for a wonderful trip. Beautiful towns and landscapes, pleasant walks, excellent accommodation and food. And all organised so efficiently and pleasantly by UTracks (thanks Dana and Jaclyn) and UTracks' Italian partners.

Walking in Puglia

20 Oct 2019

This is a great trip for walkers on holiday, rather than a walking holiday. The walks were not demanding, and there was a lot of time between to look around the fantastic towns and villages where we stayed. Accommodation was always in comfortable, interesting rooms full of character. It ranged from a refurbished palace in Lecce, to a room within the actual town wall in Ostuni, a trullo in Alberobello to a cave dwelling in Matera. The walks were enjoyable, and covered different aspects of the fabulous southern regions of the Italian peninsula. The organisation of the trip was seamless, and support was there when needed.

Walking in Puglia

17 Sep 2024

We had a lovely week in Puglia; we enjoyed the walking and the combination of using public transport and taxis for the long distance transfers. The places we visited were beautiful and so interesting. The accommodation was mixed and perhaps options could be given for different gradings of accommodation. The gpx files provided and the walk details were fantastic and the staff were so helpful at all stages.

Walking in Puglia

18 Oct 2018

Our room in Matera was pretty basic but others had good rooms so that is just the luck of the draw. The breakfasts at each accommodation were fabulous. Really appreciated having local food.

Walking in Puglia

29 Nov 2022

It is our first self guided walk. We spent some time interpreting the trail description along the way. We got it wrong the first day and went on the wrong trail But, we were ok for the rest of the walk. Overall, we are satisfied with our experiences. [Note the UTracks navigational app will be available for this trip in 2023]
